Iso's BFG Division Adventure in Rimworld - LordCommandHook - 07-02-2022

╔═════ °• ♔ •° ═════╗

A legendary hero of this distant rimworld, Iso, embarks on the grand adventure. Having earned a reputation as a warrior of great renown and cheating death multiple times, he wakes up in the wilderness, alone, missing important bionic body parts.

He doesn't know this, but some weeks ago, he was killed in battle. As always, he was loyally defending his small desert colony. The highly advanced raiders took his body up into orbit to extract his bionic parts and harvest his organs aboard their spaceship's medical bay.

However, disaster struck, and their ship was shredded by some cataclysm: perhaps an internal error, magazine explosion, or some ultra high-speed orbital debris. Either way, the ship's automatic fire control systems jettisoned key cabins so they could safely rocket down to the planet. One of those cabins ejected was the medical bay and Iso.

After the safely landing in a disposable cryo pod and its automated thawing systems started to initiate, the last Glitterworld nanobots in Iso's body activated and brought him to life once again.

Now, alone and confused, Iso rises in the wilderness.

Game Rules:

I start with Iso, an old hero of a previous game I had. Pirates killed him and stole his bionic body parts, but he got dumped naked and alone after disaster struck his captors. He has a lot of skills, because he is a badass, but is missing his bionic limbs and bionic eye. I'm gonna say he still has his bionic stomach though, they didn't extract that one in time before disaster struck the pirate ship.

Game mode is Naked Brutality.
Narrator is Randy Random.
Difficulty is Strive to Survive.
Commitment Mode is yes.
Iso crashed in a completely, totally random location. If it's a bad spot, he has to move using in-game mechanics available to him.

Mod List:

Dubs Bad Hygiene (adds need for water)
several Vanilla Animals Expanded packs (adds dozens of mundane animal types around the planet)
Prepare Carefully (let me start with Iso)
Nature is Beautiful (aesthetic mod)
Realistic Darkness (aesthetic mod)
Less Arbitrary Surgery (reduced chances of accidentally amputating somebody's eyeball if they were adding a peg leg, for example)
Combat Extended and Guns (replaces shooting mechanics from just % hit to projectile simulations with cover)
Looks Don't Matter On The Rim (being ugly isn't a sin)
Colony Manager, Dubs Mint Menus, some other UI mods (makes it easier to run things)
Avoid Friendly Fire (pawns will at least try to not shoot their friends)

Iso opens his eyes, he lies in a shallow river in what appears to be a jungle. It's the middle of the night.

His first step must be to take inventory of his situation.

Ruins of human buildings and battles scar this jungle. Nature overtakes it, but it is still useful. Iso sets his sights on the remains of a concrete building next to the river, near a pair of neutral rhinos. He will fill in any holes and turn this ruin into his first shelter.

Firewood, building materials, and berry bushes all near a source of fresh water. This is an excellent location for now. The sun rises and he gets to work ripping out the trees that have overgrown the old building, fighting through his cryo resurrection sickness.

It will be tiny and humble for the time being, but Iso is always thinking about preparedness and defense optimistically. It is a million times better than nothing. With berries and non-aggressive wildlife right outside, it is a good location for survival.

It is cold outside, down to 7 C in the early morning hours. Thankfully Iso is extremely skilled at starting fires. This isn't his first emergency survival scenario. Cargo from the ship explosion above continues to rain down, a container of fresh plums landed nearby. Food is forthcoming in this jungle already. Hopefully good preparedness can keep disease at bay.

Good thing Iso has been able to keep himself fed, however, because barely the next day, a raider sneaks up on him with a club looking for trouble.

Early Spring, 5500
◝┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈◜

Werner, a space pirate raider from the gang The Axes, creeps through the jungle towards Iso and his hut. Presumably attracted by the crashing space debris in the area. Iso hears him coming and frantically grabs a few logs. Missing limbs, he is no match in a melee fight against a strong foe, even though he is a master of battle himself. Instead, he must use cleverness and preparation to win, so he sets a trap in front of the open door to his hut.

And like a sci-fi Rambo, Iso's simple log trap swipes at Werner's head and knocks him down in torpor. Iso claimed his first set of clothes to help keep him warm, and Werner passes from his injury almost an hour later.

Now with a set of proper clothes, some bloody silver coins in his pocket, and a steel club and knife, Iso's course is set. He buries his first foe, Werner, in a respectful grave behind his hut. The jungle shall not claim him.

Iso's place in this jungle is defended for now, but he really needs to get some prosthetics or at least a peg leg to help him get around. Until then, his grip on survival will always be tenuous.

Summer, 5500
◝┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈◜

Iso has started to clear land for a tiny farm. It doesn't need to be much, just enough to tide him over while he figures out a plan for moving long range or securing some technology to help with his missing limb problem.

It is hard work, but from late spring to early summer, Iso is able to reliably feed himself with berries and wild vegetables while scratching out his farm. It grows easily in the fertile jungle soil, in fact keeping the encroaching wild plants is a nearly full time job.

Between weeding sessions, Iso is able to start building some extra rooms onto his house. They might be crude wooden log structures leaned against this old concrete ruin from ages past, but it works. This dark dirty area will become his crafting space, after winter comes and there isn't much to do outside.

The labor of a one armed, one legged man is very slow going. It has taken almost a month to get this far, but Iso's will is iron and he has no second thoughts about his work.

Finally, the first harvest of rice grass is ready. It doesn't have the most calories but it grows fast and a stockpile is needed for the cold months ahead. Iso takes a few days to build a little outbuilding to store the dry grain.

And just like that, a friend appears from the dark jungle. Chang is from a nearby village which was destroyed in a raid by bandits. She is seeking a safe place to stay just for a few days. Iso is happy to accept the help. A gap must be cut to separate the thick jungle from the huts, to prevent a single wildfire from destroying it all.

Just in time, too. A hostile raider appears later the same day.

Gnat, raider from the Tribe of Cambar, approaches with a bow and arrows.

After the success of the last attack, Iso gets right to work building a log trap in the doorway of their hut.

Sadly, the attacker doesn't fall for it right away, and shoots her arrows at an angle through the doorway, hitting Iso a few times. He stumbles into the next room with Chang's help. Only then does Gnat commit to entering the hut, high on her own victory, and springs Iso's trap. Her hubris was her undoing.

His medical skill is higher than Chang's, and Iso doesn't trust this stranger yet anyways probably, so he just heals himself. Chang runs around trying to tidy up and cook some meals, preparing to care for Iso while he recovers from his wounds.

As Iso gets into bed to start healing from his arrow wounds, Chang digs a second shallow grave behind Iso's hut and buries this new attacker beside Werner.

Fall, 5500
◝┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈◜

Fall of 5500 has been whacky so far.

Iso fully recovered from his many arrow wounds.

His guest, Chang, caught Malaria and Iso cared for her.

While holed up recovering, a pack of manhunting squirrels surrounded and camped the cabin. Luckily the gang had no reason to leave for a few days.

A new friend joined, she says she has nowhere to go. Pattie has permanently joined Iso and they seem to get along fine.

And finally, Chang left. It was a happy goodbye, she and Iso became friends through the tough survival scenarios they endured together. It was easy to forget she was just a guest temporarily passing through.

Winter, 5500
◝┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈◜

The season gets cold but enough food is stored for Iso and his new friend Pattie. They get to work and convert the wooden sections of their house to stone, for some fire safety.

Unfortunately, Iso gets a call that Chang was injured on her way out. She is calling for help from several days' travel away. There is nothing that can be done. Iso is missing limbs and Pattie is frail and slow. A rescue party is impossible. Hopefully Chang will have to pull through on her own, and we may meet again some day.

Snow is light in this jungle, but it is still cold. Without much to do outside, the pair get to work renovating their house into a bunker. It takes all winter, but they finally get a wood-fired electric generator working to light and heat the place without campfires everywhere. There is enough wood in this region to power all our industry with it, for now at least.

◞┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈◟
Spring, 5501
◝┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈◜

The spring weather brings good weather for farming, and the duo get right to work planting a rice patch and a potato field. Springtime also brings disaster, though, a plague of scaria. Manhunting woodland critters assault Iso and Pattie almost daily. Nothing particularly dangerous except for a timberwolf, but the cuts and scratches add up quickly. The attacks come daily, but each attack takes multiple days to recover. Despite decent cleanliness and good attempts at using herbal medicines, one of Pattie's rat scratches gets badly infected. She dies from her injuries a few days later.

Iso is alone once again, more of his friends dead. As he sets off to prepare a grave site for Pattie, another barbaric pirate outlander wanders in looking for a fight. Iso does what he does best and lays a trap at the door.

With Pattie's body still warm in the next room, Iso's trap instantly K.O.s the pirate. His body is looted and Iso buries both of them. Of course, the next day, radioactive toxic fallout begins to rain down from the sky. Iso works quickly to build rooftops over his walkways and crops to protect them from the worst of it. The remainder of the springtime will likely be spent hiding indoors and under thinly roofed walkways.

RE: Iso's BFG Division Adventure in Rimworld - LordCommandHook - 07-06-2022

I would love for there to be a cool, dramatic ending for this, but instead we got Toxic Fallout, a Manhunter Cougar, Manhunter Tortoise, and five separate raids on the same day, so everyone died.

Thanks Randy.

E d i t: Also forgot the pack of 3 Manhunting Raccoons as well. Within 24 hours there were 10 hostile enemies on the map. Just too much to handle.
